I have had a number of discussions with ministerial colleagues on levels of pensioner poverty in the north-east. My most recent discussion was with the Minister for Pensions and the Ageing Society, my hon. Friend the hon. Member for Wallasey (Angela Eagle), following her visit to the region. I have since organised 19 constituency surgeries in east Newcastle, where I have been accompanied by an official from the Department for Work and Pensions and one from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. That was part of a benefits take-up campaign, which is a DWP marketing campaign supported by the local pension service, and which has been ongoing in our region since March 2009.
