Health: Diabetes

Question: To ask Her Majesty's Government what percentage of schools attended by children with diabetes do not have a policy for (a) advising staff how to supervise blood glucose monitoring (BGM); (b) how to carry out BGM; (c) how to supervise the taking of medication; and (d) how to give medication; and what action they will take to improve the position.

Answer: This information is not collected by the department. Guidance issued in 2005 by the department jointly with the Department of Health, entitled Managing Medicines in Schools and Early Years Settings, specifically addresses the issue of what schools can do to help children with diabetes and other medical conditions. The guidance encourages schools to develop policies on managing medicines and supporting pupils with medical needs. It also encourages schools to draw up, in consultation with parents and medical professionals, individual health care plans for children with medical needs.
