FREE VOTE ON THE BANNING OF CRUEL SPORTS

That this House notes the ruling by Mr Justice Laws that hunts have the right to enter council owned property in defiance of the wishes of democratically elected councils; notes that the Criminal Justice and Public Order Bill will give hunts further privileges by making trespass by hunt protesters a criminal offence, with hunts enjoying the right to police protection at public expense; notes that private landowners and individuals who increasingly suffer disruption and nuisance from trespass by hunts will have no such right, and will have to have recourse to civil law at their own expense; believes that the majority of the people of this country are deeply repelled by the inflicting of prolonged pain and stress on animals for fun; and calls upon the Leader of the House to provide parliamentary time for a free vote as a matter of priority on whether such activities have any place in a civilised society.
