COLOMBIAN STREET CHILDREN

That this House expresses its support for the work of Jaime Jaramillo and the other human rights workers working with the street children of Colombia; notes that there are 30,000 murders a year in Colombia, which is eight times the murder rate in the United States of America; expresses its grave concern that, according to official statistics published by the Colombian Government, by 1991 2,800 children had been murdered; recalls that in July 1993, the United Nations declared that Colombia was the most dangerous place in Latin America for young people; congratulates Jaime Jaramillo and the other human rights workers in Colombia and throughout South America for their work in rescuing the street children of Latin America; calls on the British Government to make formal representations to the Government of Colombia to ensure that it takes effective action to end the murderous activities of the Colombian death squads; and gives its full support for the work of the Colombian charities giving hope to the street children of Latin America.
